    Experimenting with paper and printers

Cherry blossom printed on tracing paper

Have you ever considered putting anything other than standard A4 paper into your printer? Perhaps you’ve tried glossy photo paper, or heavyweight canvassed paper for something special like a CV, but I’m talking about pushing the boundaries a bit further than that.

Now, of course, you need to be careful. Paper which is too fibrous or thick will clog up your printer, while the very thin stuff may tear or bunch up. But if you have a reckless spirit, persevere, because it’s just one more way of getting unexpected and often artistic results out of your computer.

I have had good results with thick tracing paper - it made a lovely endpaper for a hand-bound book (see the picture above) - and the thicker weights of cartridge paper, which are so indented that the ink takes on the raised portions and not the rest. Actually, that was how I made our wedding invitations. Next, I might experiment with newspaper and graph paper. My poor long-suffering printer is a bit of a workhorse, and seems to cope well with anything, so long as it’s cut into nice A4 pieces.
