    Give yourself a break

I met someone recently who used to work as an illustrator for an advertising agency back in the Sixties. He’d turn up for work at nine in the morning, and spend the day churning out pictures of consumer goods such as kettles, sofas, and battery rechargers.

Did he ever stop to think about his technique, whether he was expressing himself through his art, or how to modify his style? He did not. If he wasn’t in the mood to draw, he just had to get himself in the mood.

You’ll notice that there is no picture accompanying today’s post. I suppose what I’m saying is that I am not an illustrator for an advertising agency. I’m a mother with a full time job who came home to a fractious child tonight and had trouble putting her to bed. I sat down, did a few drawings, and felt that I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind.

Given that most of Draw Anyway’s readers are in similar busy positions, I think you’ll understand my message for today: when it isn’t working, don’t force it. There are more important things, and drawing will be a pleasure again tomorrow.

    Or the next day.

Creative minds need a break to recharge. I can’t imagine having to come to work everyday and force myself to be creative. You give me an extra day to get my drawings I did last night posted too :o)

Ha! I suppose people get used to it if it is their job - but perhaps ‘creative’ is not quite the word for what they do.
