Link: British Postal Museum and Archive

Having been talking about stamps for much of the week, I now bring you the astonishing British Postal Museum and Archive. In keeping collections tracing the history of the British postal service, it has amassed an archive of wonderful graphic design, in everything from stamps to posters.

    Weekend draw: your own stamp

It’s been a strange week; due to an unexpected health issue, I haven’t had the time to draw and post. I’m hoping I’ll be right back on track from Monday.
Meanwhile, here’s the week’s round-up; do feel free to go back and add to the discussions.
    > On Monday, the only ‘normal’ post of the […]

Discuss: What colours do you love?

Thanks to those who have enquired: our health problems seem nearly over, touch wood. The week has consisted almost entirely of discussion topics, but I hope to resume usual service next week - and I have really enjoyed reading your answers!
I’ll carry on with the discussions for today, and ask you: what colour, or […]

    Discuss: Who inspires you?

Which artists or illustrators inspire you? Discuss!
(I’m taking a short break while we sort out some family health problems).

Discuss: easy to draw, hard to draw

Is there a subject you find particularly difficult to draw, no matter how many times you try? And, more encouragingly, is there something that always comes out looking just right?
    Discuss!
(I’m taking a short break while we sort out some family health issues - please do me a favour and get some debate going!).

Discuss: What is your favourite medium?

If you could take one drawing medium with you to a desert island, what would it be? Discuss.
(I’m taking a short break while we sort out some family health issues - please do me a favour and get some debate going!).

    Drawing stamps

It is a great honour for an illustrator to be asked to design stamps for his or her country. It’s also a challenge that many have risen to admirably, bringing forth some superb examples of art within the constraints of a tiny canvas.
I’m pretty resigned to the fact that I’m probably not going to […]

    Links: A. Richard Allen

A quick internet crawl has just led me to the eye-opening blog of illustrator A. Richard Allen. What I love about it is the commentary on how he arrives at his final images.

    Weekend draw:

Here’s this week’s round-ups. Please feel free to go back and join in - none of the posts are closed yet. And many of them are gasping for some feedback. Or wait, maybe that’s just me. Either way, you’d be welcome.
    > On Monday, my theme was themes. What’s your theme?
    > On Tuesday, I told […]

    Drawing in three dimensions

All figurative drawings are effectively an attempt to solve the same problem: how to show something three dimensional on a flat, two dimensional surface.
There are various established ways of achieving this. It’s generally accepted that most of the technical means of rendering depth in a picture are no more than visual tricks, but in […]
