Look at pictures in a new way

One habit that it’s useful to get into as an artist is to look at pictures slightly quizically. If you see an image you like, be it a great master’s oil painting in a gallery, or a doodle on a friend’s notepad, ask yourself a few questions.
- What is it exactly that you like about this image?
- How was it achieved?
- Is that something you might incorporate in your own drawings?
It always adds a little to the art-viewing experience to look, not only at the picture itself, but at the way the picture was made. Scrutiny pays dividends.
Your task may have to be postponed several weeks, or until you next see a drawing or painting that you admire, but keep it in mind, and, when you do, ask yourself the questions above.
