Link: Paul Hogarth

Regular readers will know that each Sunday, I like to provide a link for your delectation and general inspiration. This week, I wanted to find a site about the illustrator Paul Hogarth, whose work epitomised almost everything Draw Anyway stands for - joie de vivre, a don’t-care attitude towards proportion and exactness, pictures that look as though they were dashed off but on closer scrutiny reveal a lifetime’s practice.
He was unashamedly an illustrator where many such describe themselves as artists. He’s best known for his watercolours of buildings and his book jackets for Graham Greene’s books in their Penguin editions.
However, there are very few sites worth looking at in relation to Hogarth’s work, so instead I’ll add his book Drawing on Life to my Recommended Books page, along with a heartfelt recommendation to buy it (or borrow it from a library) - you will not be disappointed. Apart from anything else, it gives great encouragement to those who might think they couldn’t be termed artists because they can’t draw a straight line.
Meanwhile, the best link I can provide you with is this one to a gallery - you can see a few typical examples of one strand of Hogarth’s work there, but by no means get the broad view. If anyone can find a better link, do let me know.
