Drawing faces (5) - have some fun
Faces and people seem to be one of those subjects that can get people throwing their pencil down in frustration, perhaps because it’s the thing they most want to draw, and yet one of the hardest subjects to get an immediate grip of.
My advice: just keep on trying. You aren’t going to get any worse.

Drawing faces (4): lines
No-one wants lines on their face if they can help it… or so those anti-wrinkle cream ads would have you believe.
And yet, when we first learn to draw, as children, we pretty much use only lines for faces. Eyes, noses and mouths look like this:
And as we get older and more clever, we observe, and […]

Drawing faces (3) - getting a likeness
What I am about to say follows on naturally from my previous two posts about drawing faces (here and here) .
Many people can quite happily doodle a face, so long as there’s no impetus for it to actually look like someone specific. But capturing a likeness is beyond them.
Like most […]

Drawing faces (2)
Yesterday, I wrote about the fundamentals of drawing faces, and I told you that the best place to start is to learn about proportion. In that way, the human body might be an easier subject than many others. Think about it: there are not carefully-written rules, based on hundreds of years of observation, for everything […]

Drawing faces (1)
I thought I’d spend this week posting about one theme - drawing faces. There’s certainly enough to say on the subject to fill several weeks, so I’ll come back to it regularly. This week, however, I’ll start with a beginner’s guide.

Take a break from chopping the veg this weekend and draw the veg instead. Then let’s have a look at your work.
Here’s this week’s synopsis. Remember that you can still go back and comment on these posts; there has been some nice conversation going on this week, so dig in!

Take delight in colour
I was out last night when I would ordinarily have been writing this post.. well, I have to play sometimes. So here is a quick and easy task to make your Friday easy as well as mine.
Find two, three or four colours that please you when they are placed beside one another. That’s all. This […]

Simple printmaking
‘Printmaking’ sounds so complicated and difficult, doesn’t it? But we all make prints at some point in our life, whether it’s with a rubber stamp at the office (or, like me, during attempts to potty train, where the star pupil gets stamps on her hands and feet if she produces the goods) or accidentally treading […]

Why art is a science
I’ve touched on this idea before, but I’d like to go a bit deeper into why I think that the common distinction that is made between art and science is actually not as rigid as we’re led to believe.
It’s generally held that a person is either ‘arty’ or a scientific type. Often this label is […]
