    Weekend draw: people

As usual, I’m entreating everyone to get drawing the same subject this weekend, so we can all share and compare (ooh, have I just invented a cheesy new catchphrase there?).

This week, I suggest we all draw people. Not people we know, oh no - people we see in the street. No need to whip out a pen there and then - try to keep a mental image of the person in question and draw them when you get home. This not only saves embarrassment, but has the interesting effect that while your picture may not be accurate, it will convey what you noticed most about your chosen subject, be it their fashion sense, a facial characteristic, or something else.

An interesting sidenote (well, interesting to me, anyway) - remember how I described drawing people at the bus stop recently? Well, I have seen one of the women I sketched several times recently.

    Fluffy lady

I don’t think I would have ever noticed her, but now that I have commited her particular hairstyle and furry-hooded coat to paper, it seems I have also commited her to my memory. The lesson, if there is one, must be that you never really look at a subject until you draw it. Drawing someone or something really makes you notice things you never would otherwise.

Anyway, here’s this week’s round-up. If any of these exercises still appeal, don’t be afraid to go back and try them; there’s no time limit!

    > On Monday, we discovered a worrying epidemic of blanksketchbookophobia.

    > On Tuesday, I provided you with the perfect excuse for clumsiness.

    > On Wednesday, we screwed up our eyes and looked sideways at our doodles.

    > On Thursday, I tried to make a start on the huge topic of Photoshop tools.

    > And on Friday we looked at hahahahafunny aren’t I? blank space.

Have a good weekend and don’t forget to draw.

“try to keep a mental image of the person in question and draw them when you get home”

Not going to happen for me, I am afraid. That part of my brane does not work any more. The best I can do is sketch there and then or take a digital snap…

Does not work any more, eh? I’m working on the assumption that the more you try, the better you get. I’m actually trying to concentrate really hard, as well. Whether or not it has made any difference yet, I can’t say.

Yeah - sorry I thought I had already told you - I am working on the assumption that I have MS and the MonSter had all but eaten my short term memory… ;-p

Ah, I see. In that case, a camera is a very good bet!

There was a woman at the supermarket I just couldn’t resist observing! This is actually a lot of fun, I hadn’t realised how much. But it’s left me wondering… while I was committing to memory the woman in the fluffy pink ug boots, was there another shopper who went home to draw the woman with the frayed jacket cuffs and orange shoelaces?
