Links: Miroslav Sasek (& some reminders)

A London bus queue by Miroslav Sasek

Are you familiar with Miroslav Sasek? The name might not ring a bell, but the chances are you’d recognise his ‘This is…‘ series of books, each of which contains joyous pictures of a city’s highlights. I often think that he’s an example of a man who carved out a great life for himself, staying in cities around the world for six weeks at a time, drawing. His style is so amusing and unconstrained by rules that it is an absolute joy to pore over.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the man, his life, and his art, can be found over at This is…Miroslav Sasek, a site which has such an incredible level of detail that even the favicon is worth looking at.

As you will know if you have looked at the Recommended Books page, I will receive a small commission if you purchase after clicking through from this site, so if you do feel the urge to build up your own Sasek library, I would be grateful if you followed the links on that page . But not embarrasingly so, I promise.

Ahem, moving right along, while I’m talking about links, let me repeat a couple that you might not have seen, as they appeared in comments below this week’s posts.

The ever-enthusiastic Rachel replied to my post about decorating envelopes with a reference to the amazing Mail Me Art site. If you liked the idea, but had no-one to write to, here’s a great project: the best envelope sent to the site’s author each month wins prizes, but, even better (especially for someone fighting a lifelong battle with clutter, like me), he also has plans to exhibit, which could mean your work gets seen in a gallery and perhaps even added to a book. And if you don’t particularly want to participate, the site is really great to browse through and look at other people’s work.

It was also Rachel who found the Jackson Pollock emulator (I may have to break into her house and steal her Favourites. Or, wait - does she use del.icio.us? Then there’d be no breaking and entering necessary). Remember how I set up my toddler daughter on Photoshop? Well, this is better. Much better. A clean interface and no need for learning how to pick a colour from a palette. Just click on the screen and move the mouse around, and you’ll see what happens.

I’d never heard of Miroslav Sasek before, his work is brilliant. Great Sunday link :)

No I don’t use delicious or any of those bookmarky places… don’t really know how they work. I just bookmark it on my laptop.

I think I am showing my age, or maybe my parents’ age, since it was they who collected the set of This Is… books that we used to look at together.

I’m a recent convert to del.icio.us. It is quite easy to use, and the benefit is that you have all your favourites accessible anywhere you have an internet connection - so for example it was quite useful for me in my day job when I went round visiting schools and could make a presentation without needing to take my own laptop. Plus, there’s that whole web 2.0 malarky where you can share your links with other users and even suggest ones you think your mates would be specially interested in.

Ah I seee… that sounds quite cool. I’ve seen quite a lot of those bookmark sites though, is del.icio.us the best one?

Not sure…but it does seem to be the best known, which means it is probably the most use, in the end?
