Links: Tom Phillips
I made a collage yesterday, and I had forgotten how time-consuming it can be - hmm, so much for the Drawanyway promise of ten minutes a day. Mind you, it doesn’t have to take up so much time - an abstract composition may take only minutes. But, typical me, I had to do something fiddly and small, and then the men came to deliver a washing machine, and then my husband came home with our toddler daughter and I had to put away the glue and scalpel for fear of mess or an accident, and then I came back to it after dinner and decided that, actually, I didn’t like it that much.
So, as it happens, I’m not going to post it. However, later this week, I will be writing about why drawing/making something you don’t like should not put you off drawing. There isn’t an artist or illustrator alive who can create something they love every single time they try - the smart ones know that and build it into their working habits. More on that later.

Meanwhile, this week’s link. Have you heard of Tom Phillips? Quite apposite, actually, as collage and cut-up techniques are one strand of his work. Other stuff he does is more based on formulae and strange ideas, like portraits of tiny figures he’s found on postcards. Sometimes it’s very amusing. His work is so diverse, I’m sure you’ll find something there you’ll like.
I recall that I drew Phillips in my diary - I’m shocked to see that this was in March 1998 - after buying his Works and Texts ( which I’m sure I could ill afford at the time; I noted it cost £35.00). Anyway, since I’m not posting my collage, I’ve added this ancient drawing above.
I seem to have written ‘Artists are allowed to have beards‘ underneath in my diary. Hmm, could be a post in that?
